The Curriculum Vitae of Aurora Ortiz

by Craig Baxter
directed by Jenny Culank
based on the short novel by Almudena Solana

Synopsis

Aurora wants a job as a live-in caretaker for a quiet building in Madrid. But does such a job exist? And if it does, will her lack of qualifications and experience be a help or a hinderance? How will she tackle the Talento Recruitment Agency with its rigid ideas about what makes the perfect CV and the perfect interviewee? And how will she move on from her own tragic past and make her way in the big city. Must she change to fit in with the world of work which seems determined to pigeonhole her? Or can she change that World? A funny, touching story about a young woman’s search for her perfect job.

Production

The performance piece, like the book, will take its inspiration from the idea of exploring dreams and aspirations…. About how a single piece of paper (a CV) has to represent a person…. About the meaning of ambition and being a high flyer….  About grief and loss and how to move on…. About identity and self-belief….

Classworks are currently developing this project, working with writer Craig Baxter, for an Eastern region tour beginning Autumn 2011.

Free One Hour Demonstrations For School Groups.

In association with this production, we will be offering free one hour talks and demonstrations before or after the performance to all school bookings. This will be led by director Jenny Culank and will focus on narrative themes and the processes used in creating this production.

“With her freshness, her innocence, her unconventional intelligence and her relative lack of commercial ambition, Aurora Ortiz is a new sort of heroine, one whose ethos and view of the world run contrary to most contemporary trends.  How she comes to terms with the burdens and pressures of modern life will strike a chord with her European contemporaries.  Aurora is a character who might have emerged from a film by Almodovar.”
The Harvill Press, London
